In the first programme phase (2007 until 2012) of the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments, the University of Göttingen was successful within all three funding lines. In particular, the mathematics at the university of Göttingen was successful with a Courant research center Higher Order Structures in Mathematics including three junior research groups. Today, two of the three research group leaders are professors at the Göttingen Mathematical Institute.
In line with the excellence initiative 2007 until 2012, the mathematics at the university of Göttingen was also successful with a "free floating junior research group" Discrete Differential Geometry as well as with a junior research group Statistical Methods, which was part of the Courant research center Poverty, Equity and Growth in Developing Countries.
Today, the group leader of the free floating junior research group is a professeor at the Göttingen Institute for Numerical and Applied Mathematics and the group leader of the research group "Statistical Methods" now is a professor at the Göttingen Institute for Mathematical Stochastics.
